Duration of load (DOL) behavior of southern yellow pine (SYP) laminated veneer lumber (LVL) was investigated in constant and cyclic relative humidity (RH) environments under constant-load testing in bending. The testing material selected in this study included five types of LVL fabricated by using different lay up sequences of B-, C-, and D-grade veneer combinations and two grades of SYP dimension lumber, visual grade No. I and No.2. Matched samples sorted from each material type, based on the dynamic modulus of elasticity (MOE), were prepared for both ramp-load and constant-load tests in bending. Constant 65%, constant 95%, and cyclic 65%--95% RH conditions at a constant temperature of 75°F were monitored to simulate the normal, the high, and the changing RH service conditions. Material strength and stiffness distributions as affected by material types and RH levels were evaluated in the ramp-load testing phase while the creep and duration of load (DOL) behavior of the material at load levels equivalent to the fifteenth percentile in their strength distributions were determined in the constant-load testing phase. The times-to-failure, the critical times, and the critical work densities of the tested materials as affected by the RH levels and material properties were evaluated in both test phases. All the data collected in the experimental program were used later to calibrate the analytical models formulated to define the creep and DOL behavior of SYP LVL and SYP dimension lumber.

Analytically, the benchmark DOL performance of the material was characterized by a simple damage accumulation model, which was reformulated to account for material type and RH level as discrete variables. An energy-based DOL model was proposed by accommodating the simple three-parameter power law as the constitutive relationship for describing the creep behavior of the material. Finally, a stochastic procedure was outlined for modeling and simulating the multiple correlated variables that defined the creep and DOL behavior of the materials tested. This opened new opportunities for both experimental and analytical research on the long-term engineering performance of structural wood composite materials.
