The California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory (CCDTI) was administered to a national sample of Certified Athletic Trainers (n=258). A critical thinking disposition profile was derived from data collected utilizing an electronic survey.

The goal of this study is to measure critical thinking dispositions of Certified Athletic Trainers and develop a critical thinking profile of a typical Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC). Critical thinking disposition is the consistent internal motivation used to engage problems and make decisions. Dispositions are not discrete thinking skills. Rather, they represent a measure of the ability and willingness to use thinking skills. While research has been done on the measurement of critical thinking ability and disposition in other allied health fields, very little has been published in the field of athletic training.

The discipline of athletic training is an allied health profession that has undergone a significant amount of change over the past two decades. With a requirement of new educational competencies, as well as changes in Board of Certification examination eligibility, graduates from today's athletic training education programs (ATEPs) receive a comprehensive healthcare education. However, one may question whether an increased knowledge base equates to a better finished product. Are ATCs not only equipped with a sound knowledgebase, but also be able to think critically when called upon?

Comparison of means analysis failed to reveal any significant differences among ATC demographic variables and CCDTI scores, with one exception. Significant differences were found in the subscales of analyticity, sytematicity and cognitive maturity as well as total score when analyzing final undergraduate grade point average.

Findings of this study suggest that ATCs across the nation working in many different job settings have a positive disposition towards thinking critically. Despite the absence of a required measurable outcome for critical thinking, ATEPs appear to adequately prepare individuals to think critically while working in this diverse and challenging field.
