The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of occupational stress on the marital relationship of police officers. In addition, stress coping strategies and social support systems of police couples were examined. To accomplish this task, a qualitative investigation utilizing grounded theory procedures was implemented. Six full time police officers, from various ranks, assignments, and gender, along with their spouses were interviewed. Twenty-five questions were designed to elicit information from police couples about perceived occupational stress, coping strategies, social support systems, and the impact of stress on the marital relationship. Grounded theory coding procedures was utilized to analysis and interpret data. Based on three grounded theory coding procedures: open coding, axial coding, and selective coding, several theoretical constructs emerged from the data. A discussion of the findings revealed that police officers viewed internal or organizational stress as a major chronic stressor. Two coping strategies for managing stress that police couples utilized were emotional coping responses or behavioral coping responses. Police officers tended to use more emotional coping responses opposed to behavioral coping responses, while spouses utilized an even number of both emotional coping responses and behavioral coping responses. Social support systems for police officers varied. Police officers viewed coworkers and close friends as a strong source of social support. The impact that occupational stress had on the marital relationships of police officers was divided into two categories. Police couples perceived stress as having both a positive impact on the family as well as a negative impact.
