Thesis (Psy.D.)--The Wright Institute, 2007.
This study explores the effect of exposure to television commercials containing thin idealized women and healthier-bodied women on pre-adolescent and adolescent girls' body images and risk for disordered eating. The sample consisted of 49 participants ranging in age from 9 to 16. Participants were randomized to three conditions where they were exposed to 10 minutes of commercials with images of thin women, healthy/average size women, or inanimate objects and animals. Participants completed the Eating Disorders Inventory-3 Body Dissatisfaction subscale, The Collins Figural Scales, and The McKnight Risk Factor Survey in order to determine body dissatisfaction and risk for disordered eating. Self-reported height and weight measurements were used to calculate Body Mass Index (BMI). Analyses indicate no statistically differences in body dissatisfaction or risk for disordered eating between the three exposure groups. However, a trend exists demonstrating those viewing healthy images through media reported decreased body dissatisfaction t(29) = 1.764, p<.10. A trend also demonstrates that girls with a lower BMI exposed to thin images reported decreased body dissatisfaction F(2,46) = 2.61, p = .085. Another finding of this study confirms that girls with a higher BMI report greater body dissatisfaction (r = .302, p = .035; r = .333, p = .020) and show a greater risk for disordered eating (r = .390, p = .006). Internalization of media was also controlled for, but did not differ significantly between the experimental groups. This study supports that not all media images reinforce the pressure to attain the thin idealized figure; healthy, realistic images may contribute to a reduction in body dissatisfaction in young females. It is hoped that future research can further elaborate on these findings in order to better educate the public and media experts about the detrimental impact that thin idealized images of women may have on the body image and self esteem of developing young girls and adolescents.
