Leisure is often studied separately from, or in combination with, either work or family, when looking at work/life balance. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of leisure in balancing work and family for full-time employees. The sample consisted of 8 full-time sales professionals who were part of a dual-earner partnership with child dependants. Respondents participated in qualitative interviews facilitated using a semi-structured interview guide. Data were analyzed using a phenomenological approach where the meanings were interpreted from verbatim text and scripts. Five factors were found to influence the work/family/leisure domains: life-stage, gender, technology, work role, and the corporation. The findings suggested that leisure played a key role in balancing work and family, and could operate either as a third and separate element with autonomous characteristics or in combination with work or family.
