Exotic grasses adversely affect diversity of native fauna and flora, and disrupt ecosystem functions; however, little is known regarding the direct impacts of exotic grasses on quail. The objective of this research was to quantify impacts that these exotic grasses may have on northern bobwhite ( Colinus virginianus) on a South Texas rangeland during the breeding period. During 2005 and 2006, we employed three aspects of a multiscale approach to this question: (1) a broad, exploratory multivariate statistical analysis; (2) selection function modeling focused specifically on the potential role of buffelgrass and bobwhite habitat use; and (3) a plot-based comparative analysis of forb composition to evaluate potential mechanisms influencing habitat use by bobwhites in areas with varying abundance of buffelgrass.
