Thesis (M.S.W.)--California State University, Long Beach, 2007.
This study was designed to describe perceptions of college students of Mexican descent toward mental health services. This quantitative study specifically described attitudes toward mental illness, willingness to seek mental health services, and influences on mental health knowledge. Participants included 83 females and 25 males of Mexican descent attending a small community college. Results indicated that students held negative attitudes toward mental illness. Results also indicated that students would be most willing to seek mental health services if they started hearing voices. Significant relationships were found between overall attitudes toward mental illness and the influence of books and the influence of parents/relatives upon mental health knowledge. Results further showed that there was a significant relationship between the participant's overall willingness to seek mental health services and the influence of personal experience. Programs should be developed to educate individuals of Mexican descent regarding the myths and facts about mental illness. Awareness is also needed among college students of Mexican descent regarding the array of issues that can be addressed through mental health counseling.Subjects--Topical Terms:
