Thesis (M.S.)--Mississippi State University, 2007.
Two separate but related studies evaluating the influence of group confinement on prevalence of LMBV in largemouth bass are described. The first study explored the impact of LMBV on competitive fishing events and its potential influence on increased tournament-associated mortality. The second study described a follow-up experimental study used to help identify the mode of viral transmission in confined largemouth bass. Results from the studies demonstrate that high mortality and increased LMBV prevalence is related to group confinement at elevated water temperatures. Additionally, the increased LMBV prevalence appears to result from horizontal viral transmission. These results indicate the need to reconsider methods of post-tournament holding and to further evaluate the impact tournament holding has on largemouth bass survival and LMBV transmission especially during elevated water temperatures.Subjects--Topical Terms:
