This work focuses on the political ecology of family rancher households in the Eastern Sierras, California. The deterioration of the range and disappearance of open space is one of the most urgent environmental issues in the western United States. In order to better understand the causes of these problems, it is necessary to understand current processes of land management in which multiple economic variables and folk knowledge systems are transformed into household actions. The researcher produced models of the household economic and ecological decision-making process and investigated how these decisions relate to the condition of the range and the economy of the beef industry. Political conflict over rangeland was related to the formation of ranchers' identities and communities vis-a-vis other stakeholders. The differing knowledge base and ways of learning found in ranching communities as opposed to those found in non-ranching suburban and urban communities was detailed and utilized to understand the sources of political conflict and their impacts on the environment. Research methodology included ethnographic decision-making modeling combined with ranch history and depth interviewing and participant observation. The research was conducted in the Eastern Sierra corridor of California among family cattle ranchers between 2002 and 2006.

The researcher modeled thirteen key decisions in economic and ecological resource management, finding that multiple factors influenced the decision-making process. Ranchers were influenced by their individual personalities and skills, the culture of their local ranching community, the economic structure of the local community and its integration with the national and international economy, and national regulations and policies concerning environmental management. The realities of the household agricultural enterprise and the wider spheres of regional, national, and global influence combined to yield a complex chain of events that led to decisions, management actions, and impacts on the environment. The often caustic interactions between urban and suburban environmentalists and ranchers led to a pervasive disjointedness between policy and on-the-ground reality, making effective management and collaborative action difficult. The researcher concluded the work with an investigation into the necessity for better communication and collaborative action if the goal of range land conservation is to be realized.
