The military's relationship with the media.
Menning, Anton.
The military's relationship with the media.
- 71 p.
Adviser: Barbara Barnett.
Thesis (M.S.)--University of Kansas, 2007.
The relationship between the military of the United States and the media has ebbed and flowed over the last century and a half. When not censored or denied access, the media's relationship with the military has ranged from harmonious to contentious and back again, with many stops in-between. Although various studies have treated the subject of military-media relations, the recent military's impression of the media and their role in a democratic society has merited little serious scholarly attention. Built on interviews with mid-career professional officers, this study addresses the lacuna, while emphasizing, inter alia, the military's views on the embedding of journalists with combat units, media coverage of the Iraq War, and the functions and significance of the media in a society at war. The study found that U.S. Army officers are acutely aware of the media's role in shaping public opinion. From this awareness springs a sophisticated understanding of the media, along with the desire to embrace embedding and added training in media relations.
