Thesis (Ph.D.)--Arizona State University, 2007.
This study examines the dialectics of the local and the global as presented in popular musical carnival theatre performances in the years 2000-2007 in Montevideo, Uruguay, from the perspective of Latin American Cultural Studies. Carnival theatre performs local identity as a national issue with different points of view about the future, and represents globalization as a new way of imperialist control where the corporations play a significant role. The local referents, the collective characteristics of the creation and the affective elements involved in the performances make carnival itself a very important element of identity.

Carnival celebration in Uruguay consists in a one month long festival of musical popular theatre, performed during the summer, in the open air, in neighborhoods' temporary stages or "tablados". Every night, families and groups of friends gather around these tablados to assist to the performances, talk with neighbors and friends, eat and drink what they sell around, flirt or play. In this informal and familiar context, the comments generated by the performance help discuss ideas and develop a sense of collectivity among the participants that generates a favorable context for creating identity.

Carnival theatre discusses the actual identity between the tensions of the real chances for the country to exist in a meaningful way in the globalization context. The performers use utopias and dreams to project desires and goals and at the same time they question the real chances for a positive change and oppose them to the alternative of emigration. The generational issue is the most relevant element indicating different identities among the people, because of the way of evaluating the past and the future, and because of a particular kind of humor and structure in the performances. However, carnival spirit as the joy of getting together with friends and family to communicate meaningful ideas in a meaningful environment is common to all participants of all ages.
