Young opera singers are faced with many challenges in preparation for a professional singing career. Some of the important issues they face are not taught in schools or universities and can only be exposed by those who have had long, outstanding careers in the business. In an interview with Marilyn Home, the legendary, internationally-renowned mezzo-soprano, she offers key insights into the challenges a young singer faces both professionally and personally, based on her long, successful career and experience. The interview focuses on topics regarding what a young singer should be prepared for before working with opera companies today, issues of professionalism and collegiality, young artist programs, managing a family and career, challenges of staying vocally healthy, opinions on how opera has changed over the years, the importance of finding the right voice teacher, and studying in Europe as opposed to the United States.
