520 $a The overall aim of this research project is to qualitatively assess the comparative accuracy of the Computer-Assisted Skeletal Analysis Application (CASAA) and a film-based analysis in determining the skeletal maturation index (SMI) on hand-wrist radiographs. The basic assumption of this research is that CASAA will reduce intra- and inter-observer error and increase accuracy in determining the SMI of the hand-wrist radiograph of a patient.
520 $a A retrospective sample of 18 hand-wrist radiographs displaying a wide range of SMI's was selected from patient charts at the University of Louisville Department of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry. The radiographs were digitized and saved as Bitmap (BMP) files. Thirteen observers with similar experience in analysis of hand-wrist radiographs independently determined the SMI using CASAA and using the original radiograph and light-box. All observers completed the process using both methods of hand-wrist assessment twice. For all images SMI was determined by an independent expert and used as truth to determine accuracy. Intra-observer variability using Kappa, inter-observer variability using an intraclass correlation with coefficient alpha, and accuracy using a one way ANOVA will be assessed and significance (p<0.05) will be determined.
