The aerodynamic performance of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Combined Experiment Phase II and III horizontal axis wind turbine rotors have been studied using a 3-D Navier-Stokes solver. Four turbulence models including Spalart-Allmaras (S-A), Standard k-&egr;, k-&egr;-Realizable and k-o-SST were used and evaluated. The experimental data from the IEA Annex XIV database was used to compare the results. The predicted results compared well at the pre-stall and stall regions of both rotors. In the post stall region, the predicted values did not match very well with the experimental data.

A study to predict the aerodynamic performance of a diffuser augmented with the wind turbine rotor was also conducted in the present work. The rotor was enclosed with a simple diffuser design having a length (L) and a cone angle (theta). The effect of a diffuser on the rotor is shown in terms of wind energy capture efficiency and other parameters. The simulations were carried out for various diffuser parameters and the results in terms of mass flow rate, power ratio, pressure recovery, overall pressure recovery, diffuser efficiency and augmentation were compared. Enclosing the wind turbine rotor with a diffuser increased the power efficiency of the rotor.

In another study, the rotor was enclosed with a simple diffuser design having the cross-section of a deformed NACA0015 airfoil. The simulations were carried out for three diffuser angles keeping the wind speed constant. Results in terms of power ratio, augmentation, pressure recovery, thrust coefficient ratio and mass flow rate ratio were obtained. The parameters increased initially with an increase in diffuser angle and then decreased at higher diffuser angles. The main reason for the decrease may be attributed to a boundary layer separation at the trailing edge in the diffuser at an angle of 25 degrees.

Finally, the effect of a fine grid and mixed laminar and turbulent computations on the NREL Phase II rotor blade were studied and discussed. Predictions with regard to the aerodynamic forces on the blade improved with respect to the fully turbulent results.
