Defense style as a characterological predictor of racial identity development.

Defense style as a characterological predictor of racial identity development.
- 207 p.
Adviser: Samuel Juni.
Thesis (Ph.D.)--New York University, 2007.
Most racial identity research has been based on the theory of Janet Helms (1990a, 1990c, 1995) which holds that racial identity is largely determined by a developmental process. The present study begins to consider the extent to which certain personality variables may also determine racial identity. The personality variable examined in this study is defense style. It was hypothesized that the unconscious strategies a person typically employs in response to anxiety in general will to some extent predict how that person relates to race. It was also hypothesized that the relationship between defense style and racial identity would be moderated by saliency of race to self-concept. It was expected that personality variables such as defense style would have a stronger relationship to racial identity for people for whom race has a low saliency.

The study involves a case controlled sample of 292 adults consisting of 65 Asian Americans, 50 Blacks, 61 Hispanic/Latinos, and 116 Whites. Defense style was measured with the DSQ-40 (Andrews, Pollock & Stewart, 1989) and the DMI (Gleser & Ihilevich, 1969). Racial identity was measured with the PRIAS (Helms, 1995) and the WRIAS (Helms & Carter, 1990), and saliency of race to self-concept was measured with a modified version of the Centrality scale of the MIBI (Sellers, Rowley, Chavous, Shelton, & Smith, 1997).

Hierarchical and standard multiple regression analyses showed that Neurotic Defense scores partially predict Immersion-Emersion scores, Devaluation scores partially predict Reintegration scores, and Reaction Formation scores partially determine Contact scores with the White sample. With the People of Color sample, Reversal of Affect, Denial, and Autistic Fantasy scores were found to partially determine Conformity/Pre-Encounter scores. Projection scores were found to predict Immersion/Resistance scores, and Immature Defense and Neurotic Defense scores were found to partially predict Internalization scores.

Partial support was found for the moderating role of saliency of race to self-concept. Several group differences in racial identity development based on sex, race, and country of birth were also found, and results are discussed in light of their implications for practice and future research.
