The study examined the impact that collegiate academic performance, academic satisfaction, athletic success, academic and athletic role interference, physical and mental health had on the self-esteem scores of 6,218 former Division I student-athletes. These data were derived from the NCAA Study of College Outcomes and Recent Experiences (SCORE) survey, a large-scale longitudinal study undertaken to examine the long-term consequences and perceptions of the college student-athlete experience. Linear regression analysis was used to examine the predictive utility of the explanatory variables on self-esteem when statistically controlling for demographic variables and to look at how these relationships varied based on sport category. Results indicated that mental health, academic satisfaction, social support, relationship status, salary, and current exercise level had significant independent relationships with self-esteem, though there were some variations among sport categories. These findings suggested that student-athletes who were well-rounded academically, athletically, mentally, and socially tended to have higher post-collegiate self-esteem. Substantive results and the implications of these results for mental health professionals and coaches, trainers, and administrators were discussed.
