This study explores the "Quarterlife Crisis" phenomenon by evaluating the relationship between, and predictability of, demographic variables, hope, self-esteem, self-efficacy, and social support on life satisfaction. The participants were 300 individuals ranging in age between 18 and 35 years. Participants were solicited via newspaper advertisement and through personal Internet searches for participation on an Internet-based questionnaire. All participants completed a survey that included questions regarding demographic characteristics, the Life Satisfaction Index, the Self-Reported Life Satisfaction Scale, the Hope Scale, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the Social Provisions Scale, and a measure of self-efficacy developed for this study. Using a Likert scale, participants were also asked to rank order specific developmental tasks according to their personal levels of importance and to discuss these rankings. The average target age at which individuals wanted to meet their most important task was 30.

Results indicated that the factors of hope, self-esteem, self-efficacy, and social support are predictive of life satisfaction beyond the demographic characteristics of gender, age and race in this sample of 18 to 35-year olds. The psychosocial constructs of Hope, Perceived Social Support, and Self-Efficacy were found to be most highly predictive of life satisfaction among 18 to 26-year olds while Self-Esteem and Self-Efficacy were found to be most predictive of life satisfaction among 27 to 35-year olds. Moreover, the data indicated that participants between the ages of 18 and 26 years tended to report greater life satisfaction than members of the older age cohort (27 to 35-year olds). Finally, a variety of factors were found to significantly relate to one's perceived level of life satisfaction, including career satisfaction, financial situation, and contentment with one's interpersonal relationships, among many others. Future research should incorporate the additional factors in analyses in order to determine more completely the factors that might contribute to Life Satisfaction in this age group.
