This study assessed the dynamics of police patrol officer personality and coping as these variables related to the stress and burnout of the police patrol officer's work role. A sample of 132 police patrol officers from seven law enforcement agencies participated in the study. Organizational Stress and Task Stress were both examined. Three levels of burnout were examined using the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). Both Organizational Stress and Task Stress were found to be related to Emotional Exhaustion and Depersonalization, but neither stress was related to an officer's sense of Personal Accomplishment. Personality was predictive of both stress and burnout. The 16 PF Express Edition was more predictive than the Big Five of burnout and coping. Specifically, an anxious personality was most predictive of both Organizational Stress and Task Stress. Officers who were reserved or detached (low Factor A), emotionally reactive (moderate Factor C), or sensitive (low Factor H), were more likely to experience Emotional Exhaustion and Depersonalization related to burnout. Similarly, officers who were suspicious (high Factor L), self reliant (high Factor Q2), and tense (high Factor Q4) were also more likely to experience burnout related to Emotional Exhaustion and Depersonalization. The Ways of Coping (Revised) was used as a coping measure which assessed eight subscales of how an officer coped with stress and burnout. In regards to personality and coping strategies, officers who had warm personalities (high Factor A) were likely to cope with stress by using social support or accepting responsibility. Officers who were emotionally stable (high Factor C) coped with stress by not accepting responsibility and not avoiding the stressor. Socially bold officers (high Factor H) coped with stress by seeking social support and not avoiding the stressor. Vigilant officers (high Factor L), self reliant officers (high Factor Q2), and tense officers (high Factor Q4) were all likely to cope with stress by avoiding it.Subjects--Topical Terms:
