Eighty-four seminary students from a conservative Midwestern Christian seminary were surveyed to examine the relationships of self-perceived competence to counsel and attitudes toward mental health services with willingness to refer for mental health services. This study improved upon most previous research in that it utilized established measures of counselor competence (Counseling Self-Estimate Inventory) and attitudes toward mental health services (Attitudes Toward Mental Health Services Scale). The study also explored the role of perceptions regarding the curative potential of theological versus psychological factors in respondents' willingness to refer to mental health professionals. Using multiple regression analyses, a statistically significant (yet modest) relationship was observed between counseling self-efficacy and willingness to refer. Attitudes toward mental health services were also significantly related to willingness to refer, with the Confidence in Mental Health Services scale uniquely accounting for the greatest amount of variance (21%). Belief in the curative value of psychological factors also demonstrated a statistically significant relationship with willingness to refer (r = .34).
