Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2008.
The purpose of this study is to identify, describe, and evaluate the barriers that prohibit or affect the continuing educational development of nontraditional African-American graduates. The study will consider several motivations that propel African-American learners to participate in a graduate program, but will also examine the barriers, real or perceived, that mitigate against that participation. Three basic research questions will be studied: (a) What are of the most important motivations that compel African-American adult learners to enter a continuing education program, in general, and an online degree program in particular? (b) What are the most important barriers that deter African-American adult learners from entering a graduate program? (c) Is there a relationship between the historical educational background of African Americans and the real or perceived barriers?
