The intent of this study was to examine the relationship between adult learning style and the professional background, personality type, education level, and demographics of adult students within functional chaplaincy. This new type of chaplaincy has emerged in response to recent societal changes and involves specialized qualification training incorporating critical incident response and effective counseling strategies. Unlike traditional chaplain preparation, functional chaplaincy training programs are brief, intensive, and focus upon effective, hands-on ministry in critical or crisis situations. Given the projected increase in need for functional chaplains, it is imperative that these training programs are optimally effective.

This study drew from Knowles' theory of adult learning or andragogy (Merriam, 2001), Conti and Kolody's theory that learners use various strategies to accomplish their learning tasks (Conti, 1998), and the basis that educational research and practice has demonstrated learning can be enhanced when the instructional process accommodates the various learning styles of students (Buch and Bartley, 2002). It employed a mixed-methodology research design consisting of quantitative and qualitative components and was conducted within the context of a functional training program offered through a Midwest U.S. chaplaincy organization. It also utilized the ATLAS (Assessing The Learning strategies of AdultS) instrument developed by Conti and Kolody (Conti, 1998).

In the quantitative component of quasi-experimental design, survey data was collected from two hundred and twelve functional chaplains to examine potential relationships. Then, qualitative data via personal interviews was gathered from twenty-five functional chaplains of varying involvement levels to gain additional data related to training program effectiveness.

Although partially predictive, results indicated a definite predictive relationship between personality type and a defined, categorized adult learning style. Conversely, professional background, education level, and demographics were not found to be valid predictors. Recipients were also overall satisfied with the training program, perceived it to be very effective, and only offered minor upgrades for potential improvement. Some differences were noted with functional chaplains as a sample population, and results highlighted the relevance of following andragogical guidelines for adult learners, which, beyond potentially using personality type to predict adult learning style, may offer additional suggestions for improving training program effectiveness.
