As mission trips and short-term cross-cultural service-learning courses grow in popularity in church and schools, researchers have investigated the efficacy, impact, and outcomes of such experiences on student learning and development. This research project examines students' perceptions regarding the impact of one such course on their spiritual lives and faith formation. SU CASA, an acronym for Susquehanna University Central America Service Adventure, is a two-week service-learning course taught in Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

Applying the insights of Sharon Parks and James Fowler as theorists in the field of faith formation, and Janet Eyler and Dwight Giles in the area of service-learning pedagogy, journals, academic papers and interviews from 38 students were analyzed using a computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software program (NVivo). The project includes both psycho-social and biblical-theological interpretation of the data.

Principal findings include: (1) The use of a variety of intentional reflection activities is indispensable in helping young adults integrate new experiences and insights. (2) Disorienting dilemmas can lead to the transformation of perspective. This is especially true with regard to the variant ways the figure of Jesus is imagined and portrayed in Central American art, hymnody, and iconography, both traditional Roman Catholic and in communities influenced by liberation theology. (3) Certain aspects of service-learning intersect meaningfully with the faith formation of young adults. These include the construction of a personal narrative, the formation of a vocational dream, identifying with a meaningful network of belonging and caring, and appreciating one's own personal efficacy. (4) Experiencing the warm and authentic welcome of strangers breaks down xenophobia and creates space for rich encounters with others and otherness.

The theological analysis focuses on the role of the Holy Spirit in using experiences like SU CASA as means by which the Spirit brings about the dissolution, renegotiation, and recomposition of meaning that is crucial to faith formation in young adults.
