Cardiac Rehabilitation (CR) is a clinical exercise program for patients suffering cardiac events. CR concentrates on either aerobic exercise or resistance training. It has not yet been determined if aerobic training alone or combined with resistance training is more beneficial. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of resistance training on strength, body composition, and flexibility for CR patients in three hospitals. Participants included 32 men and women ages from 50 to 80 years. Three 3 x 2 factorial analyses of variance were the statistic chosen to determine significance. There was a significant mean decrease in body composition (29.92+/-15.67 to 25.10+/-14.21% fat) between participants in the CR programs, and no significant difference in flexibility (73.90+/-38.37 to 79.54+/-41.47 degrees) or handgrip strength (33.38+/-7.73 to 38.81+/-11.86 lbs). There was no significant difference between programs. Results indicated that CR with aerobic exercise with machine weights is more beneficial for patients.
