Thesis (Ph.D.)--Polytechnic University, 2007.
P2P is expected to transform the Internet from a shared bandwidth infrastructure into a combined bandwidth/storage/computing infrastructure. As the title suggests, this thesis revolves around three core aspects (i) Measurement, (ii) Modeling and (iii) Economics of P2P systems. In the area of measurement, we conducted a number of measurement studies to unravel the mysteries of FastTrack network, a popular P2P application. The measurement statistics thus collected served in construction of meaningful fluid models for the underlying phenomenon observed in the FastTrack network. We also used the technique of fluid modeling to derive an explicit expression for service capacity of a peer-assisted file distribution protocol such as BitTorrent. We construct stochastic fluid model for P2P streaming systems. We use this model to reveal fundamental characteristic and limitations of P2P streaming systems. In the area of economics of P2P systems, we tackled the problem of lack of incentives for peers to contribute resources. We are of the position that an online marketplace where peers can buy and sell surplus resources can go a long way in alleviating this problem. If such a flourishing marketplace existed, individual peers would be incited to contribute their resources to the marketplace, thereby unleashing the untapped resource pool. A study of these economics aspects of P2P systems forms a part of this thesis.Subjects--Topical Terms:
