In this study, a model of Internet dependency was proposed and examined. Previous research has looked at media dependency, but has not focused on Internet dependency. In addition, most researchers have not differentiated Internet dependency from Internet addiction or pathological use. Therefore, based on prior research on media dependency and uses and gratifications, the study focused on Internet dependency.

520 $a Ball-Rokeach and DeFleur proposed the Media System Dependency Model in 1976, and A. M. Rubin and Windahl expanded the model into a Media Uses and Dependency Model in 1986. Within a framework provided by these models and by uses and gratifications theory, the Internet Use and Dependency Model was proposed. The model encompasses important factors that influence Internet dependency: self-efficacy, anxiety, Internet motives, involvement, affinity, and exposure. The model helps explain the relationship among these constructs and how they affect Internet dependency.
520 $a The following issues were explored with this model: (a) the impact of Internet self-efficacy and anxiety as antecedents affecting Internet use; (b) the mediating role of Internet motives, involvement, and affinity, specifically, how these constructs mediate the relationships between the antecedents and Internet dependency. In addition, a path model of Internet Use and Dependency was tested.
520 $a The results indicated that Internet motives, involvement, and affinity mediated the effect of self-efficacy and anxiety on Internet dependency. The proposed path model was mostly supported. Hierarchical regression demonstrated the relative contribution of antecedents and mediators to predicting Internet dependency. Together, these factors explained 64.9% of the variance in Internet dependency. Motivation was the most substantial predictor of Internet dependency. Logistic regression also revealed that motivation predicted individuals' typical use of the Internet. People who used the Internet for information searching were more likely to use general World Wide Web browsing, whereas those who used the Internet for convenience or control were more likely to use email.
520 $a The findings lent support to uses and gratifications notions that motivation and involvement are important antecedents or mediators influencing media use and outcomes. The results also suggest that conceptualization of Internet dependency warrants further examination. Implications of the research findings and future research directions are addressed.
