Missing from most sociological approaches to language is an appreciation of language use as a normatively regulated format for social action deployed in the management of self-other relations. Most central to understanding language in this light are findings regarding the sequential organization of talk-in-interaction, and specifically adjacency pair sequences. Research has shown that in such sequences a first action shapes the environment into which subsequent talk is introduced in two ways. First, the type of action it implements makes a limited range of type-related responses relevant next. Second, the action implemented by most firsts makes relevant a choice between two asymmetrical, alternative responses. In this work I advance our understanding adjacency pair sequences by showing that the grammatical form of the first action also constrains subsequent talk. I ground this claim by examining yes/no type interrogative first actions and the turns speakers build in response to them.

Most simply the grammatical structure of a yes/no type interrogative makes a particular response form relevant next, and makes responses that depart from that form noticeable and eventful. To demonstrate this I describe the alternative response types recipients of this turn format can produce what I call 'type-conforming' responses and 'nonconforming' responses---and the outcomes achieved by the selection of one or the other. In part these outcomes can be understood only by reference to preference such interrogative project for type-conforming responses over nonconforming ones.

Additionally, I show how the grammatical structure of these interrogative projects a fine grained interpretive matrix against which interactants build and assess responsive actions. To illustrate this I focus on the array of activities accomplished by variations in type-conforming responses. These variations show how the abstract obligations entailed in normatively organized social action are fulfilled and realized as worldly objects within interaction, and how the primary constituents of turn organization---grammar, prosody and word selection---are manipulated and pressed into service on their behalf. Finally I examine responses that depart from conformity. Together these findings suggest that language, broadly conceived, must be understood as adapted to---and for---interaction.
