This study examines the use of noun phrases, pronouns, and zero pronouns for third person human referents in spoken Cantonese. The corpus is conversations from phone-in radio programs in Hong Kong. The purpose is to explore the factors that influence referential choice.

The factors I investigate describe the context of an occurrence from different perspectives. The linear perspective is the information status of the referent and whether there are other referents competing for the same reference in the immediate context. Within a clause, I examine the use of form in different grammatical roles and in different clause types. In consecutive clauses, the maintained/switched subject and speaker turn distinctions are explored. Finally, noun phrases used for previously mentioned referents are examined, focusing on the interaction among speakers. All the factors are shown to influence information flow in discourse, affecting the distribution of forms.

A speaker must use a form which is sufficient informationally to identify the intended referent. Noun phrases, being the most explicit, occur in contexts with the greatest need for specificity. New referents, and to a lesser extent referents that have not been mentioned recently, are realized as noun phrases. Noun phrases are preferred where there are interfering referents, as non-subjects, in subordinate clauses, and where there is a change of subject or speaker.

The use of zero presupposes that the context is sufficient to identify the referent since zero does not contribute any information. These situations include recently mentioned referents, non-interfering environments, subject status, occurrences in main clauses, and when subjects maintained from prior clauses, especially within the same speaker turn.

Pronouns are used in contexts where zero is insufficient but where noun phrases are not necessary. Pronouns pattern like zero with respect to information status, interference, and clause type but pattern like noun phrases with respect to subject status, a change of subject and speaker.
