Chairperson: Marshall Sashkin.
Thesis (Ed.D.)--The George Washington University, 2005.
This study is about leaders and innovation. It is a qualitative study about the leader's actual subjective experience with a new information technology. The primary question that this study addresses is "What is the experience of leaders of organizations as they explore and consider the use of a new information technology?" Using a phenomenological approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with leaders of small (service) businesses to discover the essence of their collective experience as they approached a new information technology. The results indicated that these small business leaders' are direct actors with this innovation in their organizations for a variety of reasons. They are compelled to explore new information technologies due to the pressures they feel from the broader external environment, their eagerness to improve internal efficiencies, and their strong desire to remain competitive.

They ultimately chose a new information technology that was accessible, easy to use, and suitable for their businesses today and in the future. For their organization's survival, small business leaders were themselves, the innovation champions. Implications for future research are that these small business leaders during technology acceptance are distinct from the implementation level users described in current technology acceptance models and theories. These small business leaders continue to serve as leaders, as they resolve internal business problems for their organizations, and adjust to environmental change. Future quantitative studies are needed in the technology acceptance area from the perspective of these leaders of small businesses.
