Thesis (Ph.D.)--Columbia University, 2003.
Kurt Schwitters developed a collage practice which emphasized the fragment, and his assertion of fragmentary compositional structures in a wide range of media followed from his sophisticated understanding of essential principles of fragmentary structure, which were proposed by the Romantics to express fundamental qualities of Modernity. Born in Hannover, Germany in 1887, Schwitters made thousands of collages from 1918 until his death in 1948.

This dissertation demonstrates that the conceptual underpinnings of Schwitters' artistic practice were developed from German Romantic theories of the intentional fragment as articulated by the late-18th century philosopher Friedrich Schlegel and his circle. My research augments current literature on Kurt Schwitters and establishes that---beyond its importance as a source of themes and nostalgic pictorial and poetic references---Romanticism provided the conceptual and structural foundations of Schwitters' entire artistic practice. Romantic theories of the fragment have never been examined in relation to Schwitters nor to the history of collage.

This study, limited to an examination of Schwitters' early collages and assemblages, demonstrates the centrality of these theories for the artist's re-conceptualization of the collage medium, and presents previously unknown sources documenting the depth of his knowledge of essential Romantic theories acquired as a student at the Royal Academy of Art in Dresden from 1909 to 1914, where he attended literature classes taught by Oskar Walzel (1864--1944), a specialist in Romantic theory.

Schwitters transposed the fragment from one medium to another to explore specific structural characteristics of each. This "reciprocal illumination of the arts," developed from Walzel's formalist theories, is based on Schwitters' understanding of a Romantic fragmentary structure---one that is by definition incomplete, open-ended and revelatory of processes of formation, creation and becoming. The visibly torn and fractured elements of Schwitters' collages are assembled with a dynamic adjacency that emphasizes the duality between the materiality of the fragments and the abstract geometry of their compositional arrangement.
