Thesis (M.Sc.)--University of Guelph (Canada), 2007.
This thesis describes the various market segments and stakeholders that make up Vincentian agricultural market chains. It analyzes the relationships between actors and evaluates the marketing networks that facilitate market access to agricultural entrepreneurs. Field work was conducted from August through December of 2005. The research utilizes a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach to navigate social and professional networks, developing multiple perspectives on St. Vincent's agricultural market chains. Participation, trust and motivation are explored as they relate to the competitive advantages of networked cooperative production and marketing between small independent businesses. The study uses a network development framework to better understand how networks employ administrative structures and facilitative coordination to build capacity over time. The conclusions suggest that a more cyclical and emergent approach to network management will be more practical to administrators and planners than the pursuit of ideal structures.
