Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Fullerton, 2007.
The "artist-teacher" intertwines two careers that are professional, participatory, on-going, and productive. Teaching art involves modeling self-discipline and translating for others cognitive processes and intuitive decisions that are used in the production of art. When the artist takes on the dual career of artist-teacher, three distinct styles evolve: artistic style, pedagogical style, and communication style.

In the second half of the twentieth century, the American cultural community redirected its focus from viewing the artist as an amateur to respecting the artist as a professional. During this period a series of teaching continuums emerge: one teacher after another setting a stylistic precedent and establishing philosophical, aesthetic tenets that are passed along to the art students that follow. The artist-teacher---in the atelier, academy, art museum, or university---acts as a bridge between the history of art and the act of creating. Under influential teachers, art students can find a sense of intimacy and freshness in their training and unlock the artistic learning process of imitation, emulation, and originality.

This thesis examines two teaching continuums based on artistic and geographical criteria: Realism on the East Coast and Abstraction on the West Coast. Exploring the transference of creative methods and ideas that occurs between student and teacher in the classroom leads to a deeper understanding of the historical development of the arts.
