Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Chicago, 2007.
This dissertation is a literary-historical analysis of Niccolo Ugo Foscolo (1778-1827) and his substantial, yet frequently overlooked, contributions as an author and critic of tragedy. Foscolo's tragedies and literary-critical articles on the genre illustrate his preoccupation with the then-emerging modern Italian literary canon, and his equally strong desire to place himself firmly within it. This study examines Foscolo's three tragedies, Tieste (1797), Ajace (1811) and Ricciarda (1813), concentrating on the historical context in which they were composed and the influence of Foscolo's role as a neoclassical theatrical scholar. It explores each work's reception by Italian audiences and evaluates whether Foscolo successfully colored public opinion of the works through his Italian literary journal contributions. This dissertation also addresses Foscolo's lifelong preoccupation with the genre of the tragedy, especially after his self-imposed exile in England. It focuses on Foscolo's literary journal collaborations with well-known English literary giants (i.e., John Murray, Lord Byron, and Thomas Campbell) and demonstrates his fierce desire to achieve the reputation of a preeminent Italian tragedian and critic in English and Italian literary circles. This study shows that Foscolo's career as a critic of tragedy, which culminated with spirited criticisms of Wolfgang von Goethe, Alessandro Manzoni and the new Italian Romantic school, significantly impacted the Italian Classicists-Romantics debate. In sum, this dissertation is a much-needed study of Foscolo's tragic writings' profound influence on his life, Italian canon formation and sweeping European literary trends of the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries.Subjects--Topical Terms:
