This study examined the impact of service-learning practices on the perspective transformation of persons engaged in service through their congregations. Research has shown service-learning to be an effective pedagogy in educational settings. This study confirms that the principles of service-learning transfer to congregational settings.

Six organizations that provide service experiences for congregational groups were selected for this study. Interviews were conducted with participants from each organization. Project directors were interviewed and leader handbooks were analyzed to compare organizational differences in practice. This qualitative study utilized grounded theory methodology and correlation analysis to examine the data.

The results of this study confirm a highly significant correlation between reflection and perspective transformation. Intentional, progressive, and well-integrated reflection generated greater transformation. Interaction, the quality of relationship between study participants and persons being served, was also shown to correlate significantly with perspective transformation, though to a lesser degree than reflection. Importantly, this study revealed that the combination of reflection and interaction his a more powerful impact on perspective transformation than either separately. These results led to development of The Perspective Transformation Map.

Other findings show that the integration of reflection before, during, and especially following a service experience is compelling in the move towards perspective transformation. Location of service (international or domestic) is not a factor in predicting perspective transformation. Finally, previous experience is not a predictor of perspective tram formation, but it is a presence when perspective transformation occurs.
