This study seeks to determine the thoughts and behavior of six Midwest student teachers concerning the development of a caring classroom community as an element of their teaching practice. Noddings' conceptual ethic of care and Sergiovanni's conceptual school as community together serve as the theoretical framework for this research. Noddings' ethic of care identifies caring as relational, responsive, interactive, mutual, and inter-dependant, and argues that for an act to be caring it must be perceived as that by the recipient of care. She makes a distinction between aesthetic, or superficial caring, to authentic, genuine caring. Sergiovanni's concept of community is significant because it departs from the paradigm school as factory. Sergiovanni's community is a collective of individuals who believe they matter to one another, depend upon one another, and also have authentic, deep relationships of caring about and for one another. The importance of a caring classroom community as an effective learning environment, and its positive impact upon students' academic and social achievement is noted in the literature review. Also, attention is given to how race influences the notions of care.

The study was conducted during the final student teaching semester. All six student teachers taught in a mid-size city of about 200,000. The study is a descriptive qualitative study. Interviews, written documents (such as journals, lesson plans, portfolios, and professional philosophical statements), and observations produce the data of the study. The study is significant for several reasons. It was found that there are different kinds of caring. The study reports that the range of student teacher caring was from superficial, aesthetic caring to an in-depth, authentic caring. Also, the study observes that the concept of caring is influenced by the social, cultural, racial, and historical reality of individuals. However, the study notes that although the concepts of a caring classroom community included equity and social justice issues, most student teachers in the study did not seriously address these concepts in their teaching. Future research suggestions are given, as well as suggestions for teacher education programs.
