The current study evaluated an intervention that was designed to increase abused children's access to evidence-based mental health treatment. The intervention was implemented at a site where forensic medical examinations are performed on children who are suspected victims of abuse. The intervention was developed with specific assumptions that focused on increasing the likelihood that the caregivers of these children would access evidence-based mental health treatment. The assumptions were gleaned from the tenets of behavior change that are proposed by the Social Learning Theory as well as the perspective that fostering a positive relationship between the medical professional and the caregiver of the abused child is crucial for increasing adherence to treatment recommendations.

Two studies were performed in order to examine the hypotheses. The results support both hypotheses: (1) the intervention significantly increased the likelihood that the abused children would access evidence-based mental health treatment, and (2) the intervention significantly increased the likelihood that their caregivers would be satisfied with the services. Secondarily, the assumptions of the intervention that were thought to be important in motivating the caregivers to adhere to the treatment recommendations were examined. The results further suggest that the combination of these assumptions were integral to the intervention's successful outcome with regard to supporting both hypotheses.
