This research tested Atkinson's (1957) proposal that fear of failure is the capacity to experience shame upon failure. Two studies were conducted to test the primary hypothesis that individuals high in fear of failure would experience more shame after failure than those low in fear of failure. Study 1 was conducted in the college classroom and the hypothesis was supported such that of those who perceived they had done poorly on a midterm examination, those high in fear of failure reported more felt shame than those low in fear of failure. No differences in felt shame were found between high and low fear of failure individuals who perceived they had succeeded. Study 2 was conducted in the laboratory, and success and failure were manipulated using a computerized anagram task. Again the primary hypothesis was supported such that high fear of failure individuals in the failure condition experienced more shame than those low in fear of failure. Again, no difference was found between high and low fear of failure individuals in the success condition. In addition, Study 2 assessed the attributional and relational concomitants of the shame experience and found that those high in fear of failure and assigned to a failure condition generalized performance on the anagram task to the global self, felt less close to their mothers, perceived that their fathers would be more ashamed of them, and were less likely to tell either parent about their, performance than those low in fear of failure. Under conditions of success, individuals high in fear of failure felt equally close to their mothers, perceived their fathers as less ashamed of them, and were more likely to tell both parents about their success on the anagram task than those low in fear of failure. The discussion focuses on the impact of grounding fear of failure in the emotion of shame for research and theory.
