Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Iowa, 1995.
Causative constructions, as found in many of the world's languages, are similar enough to invite a unified explanation and yet different enough to make such an explanation appear to be difficult. This study, realized within the framework of Relational Grammar, accounts for all the possible variations of causative constructions attested in Spanish and other languages without any additional cost to the theory. Causative constructions are shown to be the product of the interaction between Raising, Union, and indirect to direct object advancement. All of the processes which are claimed to be involved are proposed independently in a wide variety of languages. In some languages or dialects processes may be obligatory or optional, in some cases depending on nonsyntactic factors. Likewise in some languages or dialects there may be constraints on some of the processes under all conditions or under certain conditions.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Chapter 2 gives an overview of Relational Grammar. It argues that indirect to direct object Advancement is more common than has been supposed. Chapter 3 reviews some previous studies of causatives, particularly within the Relational Grammer framework. Chapter 4 is a detailed study of the application of the current analysis to all the possible causative constructions in Spanish. Chapter 5 discusses the pragmatic implications of the choices between certain forms of causatives. It also proposes some constraints on causatives and argues that these constraints can be given a more cogent statement in terms of the analysis for causatives proposed in this thesis. Chapter 7 argues against an Equi analysis of causatives. Chapter 8 compares this analysis with the multi-predicate analysis. Chapter 9 extends the proposed analysis to non-Romance languages, including Chamorro, Choctaw, Basque, Kinyarwanda and Hebrew. The basic dichotomy between French-type and Chamorro-type causatives is traced to the subcategorization of the causative predicate.
