Chapter 3 analyzes ritualistic potency in the Indic kingdoms, whose King maintained social distance. Despite the expectations of Jewish messianism, Jesus chose the role of a Shepherd, marked by self-giving intimacy.

Chapter 4 surveys feudal domination in the Muslim sultanates, where the Elite earned individual prestige. In contrast to the elitist practices of Rabbinic aristocracy, Jesus was a Partner who demonstrated mutual respect.

Chapter 5 explores charismatic authority in the Dutch colony, which called forth the Warrior and precipitated heroic struggle. During the Roman occupation, Jesus was a Peacemaker who exhibited disarming love.

Chapter 6 investigates psychological intimidation in the Indonesian Republic, where the Bureaucrat is given formalized deference. Unlike the functionaries of the priestly system, Jesus was a Friend characterized by non-threatening approachability.

This dissertation examines the "Christ-culture" tension in Java, where societal concepts of power conflict with biblical notions of ministry. The thesis is that Javanese male ministers reflect cultural power myths more than they do christological ministry models. In first-century Palestine, Jesus faced pressures similar to those in Java. Yet he rejected the myths of Jewish patriarchy, kingship, aristocracy, militancy, and bureaucracy, redefining power and thereby becoming a model for contemporary ministers.

Chapter 7 argues for a response to the Christ-culture conflict through paradigm shifts in Javanese ministry--from Father to Servant, King to Shepherd, Elite to Partner, Warrior to Peacemaker, and Bureaucrat to Friend. Social forces shaping ministerial power are reviewed and transforming motifs for Christian ministry are suggested, along with educational strategies for promoting an alternative vision among those who minister in Java.
