Neuroimaging studies in depressed subjects report volumetric changes in the limbic-cortico thalamic circuit. As stroke subjects develop depressive disorders during the first year after stroke, structural changes may be implicit. This study examined stroke patients with depressive symptoms for structural changes in amygdala brain region. A pair-matched case-control study was made in twenty-two ischemic stroke patients (> 49.5 years). The subjects met the classification criteria for depression and control subjects were free of depression. Amygdala brain volume (obtained from MRI images) of depressed stroke patients was not a significant predictor of depression compared to subjects without depression (F = 0.886; p = 0.457). The data obtained do not support the hypothesis that depression in stroke patients may be associated with structural changes in the associated brain regions. Lack of volume changes in amygdala brain region reveals that, volume changes may be poor markers early on the disease process.
