Thesis (M.A.)--Carleton University (Canada), 2002.
The Carnivoresque is a literary theory. It uses literature as an archeological site of exploration and postulates a human culture of origin. It argues early human culture was very similar in its structure to the wolf pack and suggests that hunting and a totemic identification with the wolf were integral aspects of human behaviour that are intertwined with the development of language and culture. This paper defines key Carnivoresque terms and provides an archetypal plot structure that can be used to examine the power relationships displayed in stories.

This thesis applies the Carnivoresque to six literary works. These include three short stories by Lu Hsun; "The New Year's Sacrifice," "A Madman's Dairy," and "The True Story of Ah Q." It also examines the novel Return of the Native by Thomas Hardy, and the poems "Howl," by Allen Ginsberg, and "A Cloud in Trousers," by Vladimir Mayakovsky.
