This thesis introduces the Interaction Value Analysis (IVA) framework---a simple yet powerful mathematical formulation of groups engaged in knowledge work that can be used to study structural aspects of organizational behavior. I assumed that members place values on interacting with other members, and seek to optimize the aggregate value of all their interactions by controlling the proportions of time they spend attempting to interact with each possible partner. In order to apply my investigation to organizations in general, instead of to a specific organization, I also assumed that all descriptors of an organization are homogeneous throughout the organization. Chapter 2 focuses on the selection of a favorite interaction partner. A formula is derived to relate the number of non-overlapping criteria used for ranking prospective interaction partners to the number of people who select the most popular member as a personal favorite. An especially simple expression of that relationship emerges under the condition of homogeneity in weighting of ranking criteria. Chapter 3 presents the IVA model in a simple form where there is no contention for resources. The main finding is that a linear representation of interaction time distributions gives a reasonably good approximation of real interaction data. This implies that homogeneity idealization is not an unreasonable approximation of real, heterogeneous organizations. A secondary finding was that organization descriptions can be normalized so that organization size has no effect on model output. This allows us to consider groups of individuals as "members" for the purposes of the model, without fear that the coarser granularity would skew the results. Chapter 4 introduces "bounded rationality" as a constraint on interactions and addresses the question: "When can organizations get away with letting all members make individual decisions about their communication partners, vs. when managers have to impose structure on who communicates with whom?" These are conditions that favor ad-hoc, community based "virtual" organizations vs. more traditional formal organizations. The main finding of this capstone paper is that the IVA modeling framework can reproduce the recommendations of empirical researchers in organization contingency theory regarding the appropriateness of ad-hoc vs. formal communication structures.
