Thesis (M.S.)--Stephen F. Austin State University, 2007.
This study looks at the ways in which adult visitors attach meanings to the resources at the Boott Cotton Mills Museum at Lowell National Historical Park in Lowell, Massachusetts, and whether those meanings were facilitated by museum exhibits, audio-visual programs, and/or personal services. Specifically, within the context of a summative evaluation of exhibit effectiveness, the study seeks to answer three questions: (1) How are meanings revealed to adult visitors to the Boott Cotton Mills Museum? (2) What connections do adult visitors make to the meanings of mill resources? And, (3) do visitor connections contribute to a strengthened sense of place? The study incorporates an expert panel to identify the range of meanings included in the exhibits, and the opportunities for intellectual and emotional connections to resource meanings provided through exhibit elements. In addition, twenty-eight visitors were interviewed over a two-week period in February 2007 to examine visitor meanings, perceptions and onsite experiences. All comments from visitor interviews were transcribed and analyzed using hand-coding procedures. Sections of transcribed text were coded and sorted into several categories that reflected possible visitor connections to the meanings and significance of site resources including: history, family, immigration, workers, technology, change, everyday life, and museum critiques. These categories were condensed into five overarching topics: workers' stories, technology, an experiential "slice of life," history as a cyclical process, and museum critiques. Visitor comments were tabulated and a relative effectiveness score was derived for each of the nine major museum elements.

Overall, the results indicate the richest opportunities for connection occurred with a mixture of personal services, audio-visual programs and immersive experiences, such as those provided in the weave room exhibit. The combination of these factors seems to contribute to an overall sense of place with regards to the Boott Cotton Mills Museum. Static displays appear to be less effective as evidenced by the lack of comments when participants were shown photos of exhibit islands and asked to comment on any thoughts or feelings experienced at those locations. A conceptual model was developed to illustrate the relationship between the various museum elements, opportunities for visitor connections to meanings and visitor sense of place outcomes. The paper concludes with a discussion of recommendations for museum staff and park managers.
