Peking opera, which came into being around 1790, combined the best performance elements of all Chinese art forms and became the most sophisticated and theatrically comprehensive genre in China. Because of its oral tradition, we find very few written sources concerning its vocal technique except for some learning experience passed down by some renowned singers and some analytical works about the language in singing.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a Bel canto opera was during its beginnings also based on an oral tradition. Students learned to sing by ear. It was not until the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries that different schools started to train their singers with specific vocal goals. Along with some physicists, the great vocal pedagogues of the nineteenth century, like Garcia and Delle Sedie, built their teaching theories on scientific reasoning. In the twentieth century, more knowledge about acoustics, overtones and anatomy was added.
520 $a My research into the vocal techniques in both Peking opera and bel canto opera is based on the assumption that the pharynx and the oral cavities are to be considered as the mobile resounding bodies of the vocal organ, and that their different motions determine in great part the timbre of the voice.
520 $a Despite the fact that different human cultures may experience parallel developments, as evidenced in the development of both Peking opera and bel canto opera, yet the language as the vehicle of thought and a main tool in singing and expression, shaped a totally different utterance according to the nature of the language. As a consequence, we obtain different results from different vocal techniques, particularly those relating to the pharyngeal and the oral cavity areas.
