The purpose of this study was to understand the factors that influence physical activity among year-round residents in an isolated summer resort community. Specifically, this study explored the personal, environmental, social, and culture-specific perceived benefits and barriers to physical activity. Participants in the study were 22 year-round residents of an isolated island summer resort community located in the Great Lakes. Of the 22 participants, 16 were adults (9 female and 7 male) and 6 were children (2 female and 4 male).

Residents in this study were formally interviewed about their knowledge and amount of physical activity participation. Observations of residents' physical activity participation was also recorded along with weather conditions. Interviews occurred during the off season of the late winter and early spring. All interviews were digitally tape recorded, transcribed verbatim, and returned to the participants for member checks.

Results of this study indicated that participants' knowledge of physical activity was not as accurate as originally assumed. Most associated physical activity with sport and, therefore, physical activity participation was underreported due to the fact that residents did not acknowledge their work and transportation as forms of physical activity. With regard to men and women, motivators to remain physically active indicated differences. Men indicated a need for competition as well as a sense of commitment to others. Women, on the other hand, were motivated by the social factor that goes along with being physically active with others.
