Counselor education and development have been at the forefront of the counseling literature since the profession was established. Over the past several decades, more attention has been paid to how the training and education received by rehabilitation counseling students impact the students' perceptions of their abilities to perform the duties of a counselor. Although the research literature has addressed a wide range of factors involving counseling student preparation, few studies have focused specifically on the counseling self-efficacy of rehabilitation counseling students. Based on Bandura's social cognitive theory, the purpose of this study was to explore self-perceptions of counseling self-efficacy among beginning and advanced master's-level students enrolled in programs accredited by the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE). Participants were 59 master's-level students who provided basic background information in response to a demographic questionnaire and completed the Counselor Activity Self-Efficacy Scales (CASES) to yield scores of counselor self-efficacy. Counseling self-efficacy involves individuals' belief in their ability to perform counseling skills, manage counseling sessions, and deal with difficult client behaviors. Previous studies have shown that counseling self-efficacy is highly influenced by the education and training received by rehabilitation counseling students in their educational programs.

520 $a Statistical and correlational analyses of the data showed no significant difference in perceived counselor self-efficacy between beginning and advanced rehabilitation students as determined by total scores on the CASES. In relation to the variables of amount of clinical supervision received and amount of prior counseling experience, results showed that higher amounts of clinical supervision and previous counseling experience were positively related to self-efficacy scores. These findings have important implications for rehabilitation counselor educators because this study is the first of its kind to specifically describe the counseling self-efficacy of master's-level rehabilitation counselors-in-training. Future research should include comparison studies that examine differences in the perceived counselor self-efficacy between rehabilitation counselors-in-training and general counseling students.
