Governments generally recruit police executives who promote quality regulatory practices, develop structures in the organization's use of discretion, and make choices on methods achieving compliance from the general public (Sparrow, 2000). The identification of law enforcement executives possessing appropriate personality traits and dispositions capable of promoting regulatory practices to achieve compliance from the general public is one of many important factors influencing the potential success of the organization. This study examined the personality profiles of law enforcement executives from a specific agency through the use of a quantitative methodology based on survey and criterion data. The surveys used in this study were the Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI) and Hogan Development Survey (HDS) which were used to measure normal personality traits and levels of dysfunctional disposition(s) respectively. The criterion data was used to identify possible correlation(s) with the HPI and HDS. The sample consisted of 37 participants recruited from the hierarchy of a large metropolitan law enforcement agency. Descriptive statistics were performed to obtain a demographic profile of the sample as well as percentages and frequencies. Descriptive, t-tests, and correlation analyses were conducted.

The participants in this study varied with respect to their type of police duties but they generally had the same skill sets required for their jobs. The participants were categorized into two groups: Group 1 was the appointed staff ranks and Group 2 was the civil service ranks. From the research reviewed and presented in this study research questions and hypotheses were generated about the two groups relating to their scores on the HPI and HDS. Results found that one of five hypotheses was supported. The supported hypothesis stated that both groups would have low to average scores in the specified HDS scales. Additionally, the research showed varying correlations between HPI and HDS scales for each group. However, the groups' scale scores did not statistically differ significantly on the HPI and HDS scales. The study was able to identify a personality profile range for the law enforcement agency examined.
