Thesis (Ph.D.)--Howard University, 2007.
Ernest Bormann's Symbolic Convergence Theory (SCT) was used as the theoretical framework while employing fantasy theme analysis as the method to critique the artifacts used by Kwanzaa Community Church, Presbyterian Church, USA to disseminate its message of salvation, social justice, and celebration of African-American heritage by its use of an African-American cultural holiday called Kwanzaa. SCT is a social theory of communication that provides an explanation for group consciousness, consisting of emotions, motives and meanings. This consciousness is shared through narrative or fantasies, the creative and imaginative ways individuals share their hopes and fears to cope with life experiences, in verbal and nonverbal forms. As the members of the group share their experiences, fantasy themes are formed. These symbolic cues (or fantasy themes) take the form of a single word, phrase, gesture, or picture (Bormann, 1985a). Kwanzaa Community Church has incorporated the Nguzo Saba or Seven Principles of Kwanzaa as symbolic cues to trigger its members to advocate for themselves and others.

This study is significant in that it focuses on the mission of Kwanzaa Community Church which is designated as the first African-American Presbyterian Church in the state of Minnesota. The church, while intentionally celebrating African and African-American culture, has created a rhetorical vision that is inclusive of all people. Kwanzaa Community Church, in creating its cultural and rhetorical space, uses the Kwanzaa philosophy and principles to create, raise, and sustain a message of social justice within the context of a Christian message that upholds the doctrine of salvation. The cultural holiday in its original development was not affiliated with any specific religion however, it is spiritual in nature and was created out of a need for African Americans to be agents of their own liberation, by providing guidelines for building a strong, moral, and ethical community (Karenga, 1994, 2006). Therefore, Kwanzaa the cultural holiday and Kwanzaa Community Church, while differing on the use of a specific religious perspective, share rhetorical visions of social justice and the creation of a better community for humanity while providing religious and cultural space for the celebration of African and African-American heritage.
