Executive stress is the focus of this study. One hundred fourteen (N = 114) top level male executives, who are in the high income bracket (earning $ 75,000 and above) and between the ages of 30--60 are the selected subjects. Research has shown that there is as positive correlation between health and high socio-economic status. 520 $a The general hypotheses in this study are that each of the variables (stressors, hardiness personality, and social support) will be a significant predictor; each of the variables will make a unique contribution to the severity of manifestations of stress symptoms; and the predictors taken together will significantly correlate with the severity of stress manifestations.
520 $a The subjects from this study were taken from the Washington, D.C. area. A total of 5000 inquiry letters were mailed from a randomly selected pool of subscribers of a local publishing company. Those who agreed to participate and were qualified were sent a set of questionnaires that included instruments measuring stress manifestations, stressors, hardiness personality, and social support. Several responders were eager to participate but were disqualified due to sex, age, and income criteria. Finally, a total of 114 completed questionnaires were used for this research.
520 $a The findings revealed that not all the three selected variables were significant predictors. Only stressor (r = 0.775) and hardiness personality (r = 0.364) were significant predictors of severity of stress manifestations. Social support (r = 0.029) was not. Stressors (p = 0.000) and hardiness personality (p = 0.025) each provided unique contribution (p $<$ 0.05) to severity of stress manifestations but not social support (p = 0.517). The predictors taken together were significantly correlated with severity of stress manifestations (r = 0.787).
