The purpose of this paper is to describe music aptitude and measure this aptitude in a specific group of children ages five through seven. Can a child's musical aptitude be raised by using the music series Jump Right In when compared to the general music series Music and You? The study setting is Spencer County Elementary School located in rural Taylorsville, Kentucky. Ninety-four kindergarten and first grade children were tested in the fall using the Primary Measures of Music Audition. The children were then given instruction through the two different music series. They were tested again in the spring to see if there was any indication that use of a music series raised the children's musical aptitude. Results of the study revealed a small amount of evidence that tonal aptitude was positively effected by Jump Right In materials, but there was no evidence that rhythmic aptitude was effected.
