Overcoming the odds: An interpretive phenomenological analysis of academic resilience among urban young adults.
- 223 p.
Adviser: Veronique Thompson.
Thesis (Psy.D.)--The Wright Institute, 2008.
The phenomenon of academic resilience among several urban young adults is explored using qualitative interview and analysis. Particular focus is paid to the subjective meanings and understandings the participants hold for their academic achievements. The participant's perceptions of supports received as well as challenges to academic success are documented and analyzed using an interpretive phenomenological framework. Previous risk and resilience literature is discussed and the results of inquiry are compared and contrasted to previous findings. Results indicate numerous similarities regarding the role of protective factors originating at various levels as mitigating the presence of identifiable risk and adversity factors. Among the most notable findings include; the tremendous impact of peer influences on academic achievement, the protective function of the presence of caring individuals, and the power of the possession of certain individual traits or characteristics such as an ability to adapt to and learn from experiences.
